Description

Asimina triloba, also known as Pawpaw, is North America’s largest native fruit. This small understory tree thrives in hardwood forests across most of the Eastern United States, and is beloved for its creamy, tropical banana and vanilla-flavored fruits.

Pawpaw trees are best planted in moist but well draining soils in hardiness zones 5-9. These trees are grown in 14″ tree pots to allow them to develop a healthy taproot; please take care when planting not to break or damage the taproot as that can kill or severely stunt the growth of the tree. Being understory trees, they do best in full to partial shade and well-draining soil. If planted in full sun, shade cloth is recommended to prevent scorching of leaves during hot summer months. Pawpaw is deer-resistant, but caging or fencing young trees in areas of deer high-pressure is helpful as deer may still sample new growth in spring, or damage small trees by rubbing.

Pawpaw trees cannot self-pollinate, so if fruit is desired, two genetically different trees are needed. These trees are seed-grown from wild-foraged Ohio fruits, are not a grafted known cultivar, and will have unique genetics. They are at least one year old, and normal growth time to flowering and fruit production is 7-8 years.
