Description
A set of 10 cold-stratified pawpaw seeds, ready to be planted. Seeds should be sown around 1-2″ deep in tall containers. Germination and initial growth is slow, as they will form a deep taproot before pushing above the surface of the soil. Cotyledons rarely, if ever, fully emerge from the seed coat, and will often break off the seedling’s stem once the seed is pushed above the surface; true leaves will follow. In the first year, 5-10″ is typical for growth before fall. Seeds must be kept damp and will become non-viable if allowed to dry out before sowing.
Asimina triloba, also known as Pawpaw, is North America’s largest native fruit. This small understory tree thrives in hardwood forests across most of the Eastern United States, and is beloved for its creamy, tropical banana and vanilla-flavored fruits.
Pawpaw trees are best planted in moist but well draining soils in hardiness zones 5-9. Pawpaws cannot self-pollinate, so if fruit is desired, two genetically different trees are needed. They do not grow true to seed, so two trees grown from individual seeds will be genetically distinct. These seeds are collected from wild-foraged Ohio fruits. Normal growth time to flowering and fruit production is 7-8 years.
