Description
Active adults of the Hermit Flower Beetle, Osmoderma eremicola. Adults live roughly 3-5 months, and can be kept communally. They will eat soft, sweet fruits such as banana, mango, and melon, or can be fed 1:1 diluted pure maple syrup. Beetle jelly also works, but seems to be less preferred. Males sport a wider thorax with a deep scoop that they will use to bulldoze other males for dominance, these scuffles rarely cause any injury. Females have a narrower thorax with a much less pronounced groove.
As a defense mechanism, adults will secrete a smelly liquid when disturbed.
Females can lay 60+ eggs during their lifetime if kept in optimal conditions of a suitably (16 qts works) large enough container with a few inches of decaying leaves, decaying wood, and/or organic compost; however they are also not picky and can still lay eggs in less desirable substrates like coco-coir or regular topsoil.
